What is “MUGENGA”
Opening a portal to an infinite society
“MUGENGA” is a realistic painting drawn using an unusual painting method called “MUGEN-GAHOU”. Because it is drawn without using perspective and shading, following in the footsteps of its predecessors in ancient painting, there is no “viewpoint” and “light source” on the screen. Furthermore, since the drawing range on the web continues to expand and the density continues to increase without limit, the area and density are theoretically infinite. It will never be completed.

In other words, “MUGENGA” is traces of the artist’s training to remove meaning from all phenomena, to let go of purpose, to get rid of values of superiority and inferiority, and of judgment, and to gain the “aimless gaze of the universe” to look at ourselves quietly from a cosmic standpoint. What is really in the world in front of us, and how much is there? And what are we really doing in that world? We simply look at the formation of the external environment. The act of drawing (or looking at) this MUGENGA functions as an opportunity for such insight. MUGENGA that continue to be drawn and uploaded to the Web day after day can be said to be either the traces of a form practice for people to acquire the “aimless eye” or simply an expression of the “source of all phenomena” filled with possibilities.
Even today, MUGENGA continue to accumulate little by little through human manual labor.
